How we roast
Solace is a nano roastery located in Leiden, the Netherlands. We roast everything to order using a Roest L100 ultra in very small batches — with a bigger cousin coming possibly, and hopefully, very soon. With our small batch size, we like to iterate our roast profiles plenty, and pursue more optimal roasts for each coffee - trying to really get the most out of each green.
I like to see ourselves as not only roasters but also as strict curators when we select good roasts and green. Our curation - what passes our quality standards - is quite strict in the sense that far from all the green and roasts we try ends up for sale on this store. Each coffee on the webshop is there with a lot of intent, and is meant to be thoroughly enjoyed.
Solace — tranquility and comfort — is the curated experience we want to create, and translates directly to our roast approach and green selection. Our roasts are quite light, but not so light that many will struggle to get good brews. Brewing a balanced, smooth, and complex cup has to be as easy as nature allows - and that is how we determine what for us a "good roast" means.
In terms of profile, we describe our roasts as filter-focused light roasts. We find our roasts to have a very clean and light texture with a clear, but defined, weight. Solace roasts are sweetness forward with a balanced, and well integrated acidity. This clean, sweet backdrop with a balanced acidity allows you to enjoy the unique flavour notes of each coffee, without conceding too much in terms of a nice "full" and comfortable cup.
